Yes.
Quite honestly, the Regular/Italic/Bold/Bold Italic setup is ten years
out of date, and was only ever really a Windows standard (I don't
think it is any more, but it's been a long time since I've done
Windows font management). Mac fonts have never really reflected that
kind of distinction; so for Hoefler Text .dfont you have:
Hoefler Text Regular
Hoefler Text Italic
Hoefler Text Black
Hoefler Text Black Italic
Hoefler Text Ornaments
"Black" corresponds to bold, "Black Italic" to bold italic. But
"Ornaments" doesn't correspond to any of them - it's extra ornamental
characters.
On Macs since the introduction of OS X, in Mac applications (not
Microsoft apps, which do their own thing, usually badly), you don't
have a "Bold" and "Italic" button - you have the font name, and then a
list of styles to choose from ("Regular", "Italic", "Black", "Black
Italic", "Ornaments"). Many fonts used in design are more complicated
- Futura Std has "Book", "Medium", "Light", "Book Oblique", "Medium
Oblique", "Light Oblique", "Bold, "Extra Bold", "Heavy", "Bold
Oblique", "Extra Bold Oblique", "Heavy Oblique".
Our UI doesn't reflect this; it follows the old Windows standard with
a bold & italic button. Thus a lot of Mac fonts disaggregate in the
Sophie font menu.
